In Memory of Kay

The Day My Sister Kissed Dolly Llama

No photo description available.**DOLLY Llama**

When I created my blog, My Inner Chick, I wanted something significant on my site that reminded me of my sister, Kay. Something that made me laugh and cry at the same time. Something meaningful. Something that was truly “HER.”

I chose big pink lips.”

See the source image

The people who know Kay remember her lips because she made them remember. (perhaps you have a story about her lips)

For example, she’d kiss everybody she met and left smeared crimson and cherry all over their faces. Sometimes sparkles.

She’d kiss the glass windows of cars if she recognized somebody’s car in a church parking lot or outside a grocery store ( just to say hello. Just to say “I was here!”)

But my favorite lip story has to do with a field trip, which I asked her to chaperone with our elementary kids from Laura MacArthur School. Of course, since she adores all animals, she immediately said “YES!”

So, on a beautiful spring day, several teachers, paraprofessionals, and other chaperones arrived at the Duluth Zoo.

The students were excited and running around like the animals they were looking at. It was amusing watching them observe some of these amazing creatures for the first time.

I, for one, despise observing the kings of the forest inside cages, but that’s another story. ((SIGH)))

“Look!” My sister said. “It’s Dolly!”

“Who the sam- hell is Dolly?” I asked.

“The Llama, Dum-Dum.” She said.

Before I could say another word, she ran over to Dolly and was talking to her like an old friend.

I know, hooooooney. Yeeeeeees, I understand. I love you, yessss I dooo.”

You need to understand something–My sister loved animals and they loved her. She had stray cats: Maya, Clarisse, Simba, Sparky, Downy. She had a few birds, which she’d take in the shower with her. Luxury. She had a family of raccoons visit her house, deer, & even a black bear.

To this day, I believe they all knew she was as lonely as they were. Animals know this kind of stuff, you know what I mean?

Anyhow, back to the story.

After a couple hours of lions and tigers and bears, we started getting the kids ready to line up for the school buses.

I hear somebody yell, “Who the…What the…Looooook at that Llama!”

Dolly, and I’m not exaggerating, had gigantic, pink lips on her face on both sides of her fur.

“Who would do that?” One of the teacher asked.

I looked at Kay with dagger eyes….“You’ve got to be kidding me? This is your last field trip.”’

She just smiled a wicked, full lipped, crimson smile and said, “Shhh, or they’ll hear you.”

———Dolly, the 12 year old Llama, died one year after Kay was murdered. I can’t help thinking, they’re together again and she’s kissing the heck out of him!

No stories other than the ones you share – I LOVE when you share Kay stories. I love that she left kisses on people’s car windows – that is so cool! I wish someone could have taken the picture of the Llama who was be-kissed by an angel!

What a gorgeous story. The best in the world are taken from us too early. The empathetic, the lovely, the sweet, they never have enough time on this earth.

Aw, what a sweet story, Kim. LOVE that Kay was an animal lover and she had many four legged friends. They do recognize loneliness, I’m sure of it. Must have been hilarious when you caught her out on her on Dolly’s fur kisses. PINK lips are the perfect representation of Kim and her memory.

Kim as an animal lover myself I LOVE LOVE this story!! So incredible. And I love how you tell the story too, it is so heartwarming. As well, the fact that your sister put kisses on peoples cars speaks a lot to the kind of person she was. How wonderful that you have such incredible memories and her glowing spirit lives on in you and in your stories.

So much love your way ,

I adore that about your sister. What a beautiful spirit – to just make everyone feel so completely loved, seen…by a smooch. People will remember how they were treated and they will always remember her warmth and kindness Kim. This story is too precious and I can only imagine the bright pink lipstick on Dolly. It made me giggle! I love this story of your sister. xoxox
