15 Obsessions I Really, Really, Really Love

“All extremes of feeling are allied with madness.” –Virginia Woolf, Orlando

Love Plath

Love Plath

  1. Chopped: I tape every episode. For me, cooking is like writing. Starting from nothing and creating something beautiful— adding a herb for depth, a spice for substance, a spice for a kick in the ass. I’m obsessed.

  1. Orange is the New Black: Don’t underestimate women in prison, babe. This tour de force is about deep relationships, love, women, & taking care of one another. I’m obsessed.

  1. Lipstick: I cannot and will not exit a store without buying a new tube of lipstick. After all these years, I still haven’t found the perfect shade. Yeah, it’s a bit of a quandary. Just ask Mr. L. I’m obsessed.

  1. Sylvia Plath: I’ve read every book, every essay, every poem. Plath is the reason I write today, the reason I survived my teen years. Too bad words couldn’t have saved her from the oven. I’m obsessed.

  1. Audio Books/All Books:   I’ve listened to hundreds, perhaps thousands of audio books. You can see me walking up 65th and Cody with my Bose headset like a big dork. The best reader thus far has been Jeremy Irons reading Lolita. His voice is maple syrup pouring inside both ears. I’m obsessed.

  1. This Scene From Sex & The City:  Clip from my absolute favorite, kick-ass, uninhibited, sensational, “Empowering ALL Women Series.” I’m Obsessed.

  1. Writing. Words:   People have asked, “Kim, why do you write?” I ask them, “Why do you breathe?” I’m obsessed.

  1. Cats: I’ve been known to walk into private yards to pet a stranger’s cat. I’ve only known a world with Tabby’s,  Siamese, purring, meowing, and long, sleek tails. You could say, I’m obsessed.

  1. London: Multicultural, historical, and overflowing with magic. The scent of curry rising, black pudding, English bacan, & bangers thrill me. She has her own heartbeat, her own style, her own gorgeousness.  I can’t get enough. I’m obsessed.

  1. Family: Big, fat, loud, outrageous, loving, opinionated, touchy/feely, mouth kissing Italians. And they are ALLlllll MINE. I’m obsessed.

  1. Elizabeth Berg: I call her my “Hot Fudge Sundae” author, because her words taste sweet and she makes me feel really good inside. I’ve read all of her books at least two times. Recommendation: Talk Before Sleep ( A book about deep female relationships ) I’m obsessed.

  1. All Things BBC: For some reason, the British do it right. I think they shall take over the universe. Blimey, I think they already have. I’m obsessed.

  1. The Game of Thrones: Power. Survival of the fittest. Love. Sex. Rock and Roll. (just kidding about the rock and roll ) Oh, did I mention POWER? The players have changed, but the game remains the same. ( I took that line from Working Girl) I’m completely, utterly, totally, outrageously, insanely obsessed.

  1. Justine Crumb: OOOOOOO-Mmmmm-Ggggg. (((((SHIVERS))) He makes me FEEL and people should make us FEEL, right? I’m obsessed.

  1. The Baking Isle at Grocery Stores: Brown sugar. Real vanilla bean. Giant Bars of sweet chocolate. Salted pecans. Dark chocolate chips. Cinnamon chips. Toffee bits. Butterscotch Chips. Cocoa. Oh, and the Spices! (have you ever seen saffron?) I’m obsessed.

Great list of obsessions, Kim! I share your love of the written word, and I love your reply that it’s like breathing. It is, you know! I’m obsessed with furry herding dogs, watching the weather, music, and jewelry (especially sparkly things!). I could go on and on … probably it’s the Italian blood that makes us so passionate, right?! Love you!

    Hi Kim!
Oh my goodness…I loved seeing this side of you!! We have several things in common (GOT, Sylvia,
    Chopped…it goes on and on.)
When you find the perfect shade of lipstick, please clue me in. I rarely buy it because everything ends up looking orange. And speaking of Orange…that’s a series I totally want (need) to see.
Thank you for giving us a peek into your beautiful heart.
    Love from KS

I so enjoyed reading all about your obsessions, Kim! Your lipstick collection is gorgeous! Some of yours are on my list, too. S & TC, it’s hard to pick one of the ladies as a favorite but Samantha is my alter ego. When I’m at Starbucks and they ask my name for my coffee order I always tell them ‘Sam’. Books, books, books—YES. I want to read that Anais Nin book in your pic! The baking aisle? Sweet!

One of my stranger obsessions would be salt. Just plain old salt. If I am craving something salty, I will go straight for the kosher salt container. Hits the spot every time 😉

    Hey Kim,

That’s quite the variety of obsessions. Although, cats, um yuck! LOL London, oh yeah, the place I was born. Fashionable Chelsea, to be precise. As for the BBC, you do realise that over here we have to pay a license fee to watch the BBC. Hell, I haven’t even passed my test! 🙂

    You rock Kim!
Love books, couscous, music, tattoos, walking barefeet, the smell of wetgrass, dancing under the rain, writing (like you, it’s like breathing to me and breathtaking too), taking photos, looking at the world, say Thank You, black boots, postcards, your words.

What a terrific list of obsessions!

I totally agree with being obsessed with Chopped. I also am obsessed with Project Runway. I do love Sex and the City too and have watched all of it, more than once. That particular scene you picked out really speaks to me as a breast cancer survivor. Love it!

    Yup BBC totally rocks.

Plus, I am and have always been a HUGE cat fan!

So we have a few obsessions in common. Great post!

Oh my. I haven’t watched any of the TV shows you’re obsessed with. But I agree with #7, writing words and #11 Elizabeth Berg. I actually got to hear her talk when sh came to the library I worked at and spoke. She seems like a really regular, nice, interested woman. I like her even better now.

And you’ve got me thinking…what things am I obsessed with? And do I have enough patience to sit quietly and think about it?
