13 Things That Turn Me On

~I only believe in fire. Life. Fire. Being myself on fire I set
others on fire. Never death. Fire and life. Les Jeux~Anais Nin

What turns you on?

I’m not talking about sex here,  Freaks.

Although I am talking about an organism inside your mind.

I’m talking about that RUSH.
That indescribable, undeniable rush of bliss. That thing that makes you
breathe a little deeper,  exhale a little
longer, and say ahhhhh.

That heat that travels from the  top of your scalp surging to the base of your painted

Something Hot.   Something exhilarating.

No.  Not a hot flash.

Something like a wild fire heating your brain and organs and

From the inside out.

From the outside in.

You suddenly belong.
You’re finally understood.
Liberated, in a way.   You are heard.

At last.

A phrase.
A quote.   A kick ass book.  Light seeping thru shadows.  Poetry pouring deeply inside your blood
stream.   A story of redemption.  A story of freedom.  The soft purr of a cat.   God
whispering your name.

Think about it.

Here are 13 things
that burn burn burn me up.

1.   This scene from Dead Poet\’s Society: O’Captain
my Captain  I love the idea
of somebody speaking up,  even if he/she
is the only one.  I have watched this
film about, um,  a million times.  This clip burns me up inside.

2.    Ariel
by Sylvia Plath.  I was thirteen
the first time I read this book.  I had
no idea what I was reading,  but I did
know one thing,  Plath was talking about me.

3.    Passionate women like Eva , from 65 Red Roses turn me on.  Watch her Last Blog Post HERE

4.    Li Young Lee
turns me on because his words saturate into my inner core.

5.    Mercy Adhiambo
Once she was lost … Now she
is found.

6.    I get turned on  when I get to attend my friends’ book signings.
This is Sweet Joe’s BOOK xx btw,  I dig that shirt,  Dear.

7     I cannot watch
This Clip without getting goose-goose-goose bumps.  EMPOWERING. Lifts me up. Makes me want to change the world.

8.    My sister,  Kay,
sets me on fire.

9.     I kind of dig writing sexy poetry sometimes.  Are you shocked?

10    This Prayer: Psalm 23, The Lord is my
Shepherd.  I’ve
prayed this every.  single.  night.
since  Kay’s Murder.  I have walked thru the shadow of death and sometimes,  just sometimes,   I have walked out to the other side.

11.    Elizabeth Berg turns me on.  She is my Hot Fudge Sundae Author,  which means… I can taste her words afterwards and AaaaLWAYS want More.

My Favorite.

12.   Daddy.  My Greatest Mentor.   Didn’t you know?

My 2 Loves.

13.    I was ready for this.   This life class changed my life.   Powerful.     Click Here WOW. (yes,  I meant “wow.” )

Music turns me on – all kinds of songs, the intro section to Yes’s Parallels where the organ is lifts me to the ceiling, the harmony of the Wilsons doing an a capella version of O Holy Night, the hint of Moorish incense and medieval dancing that is Loreena’s McKennitt’s Mummer’s Dance.

Standing on a warm, sunny beach right at the water’s edge, when the wave comes in, white foam swirling around my ankles, the quick dissolution of the sand under my feet.

The hungry anticipation, bringing home the first ripe strawberries of the season, and that first tart sweet bite of them.

The sounds of a baby overtaken by uncontrollable giggles.

The moment of coming home to see a package on the doorstep from Amazon, knowing its a book I preordered but not which one.

A hot bubbling Jacuzzi with an ice cold washcloth for my forehead.

Seeing that there’s a new post up on My Inner Chick.

Wow! I can’t begin to match your passion. When I was jumping horses, it was a perfect distance to a fence. Now, the perfect turn of a phrase gets me pretty fired up, whether reading or writing it. “Layla,” the electric version by Clapton, and “Black Magic Woman” by Santana take me back to my sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll days, which were pretty damn hot. Mornings rock my world. Blessed are the mornings, for they are filled with such promise. That first sip of coffee in the morning and first sip of wine at night. And, of course, anything chocolate.

Thanks for getting me thinking about this. 🙂

You have chosen some really beautiful things here, Kay. I love Psalm 23. It would have to be one of the greatest pieces of literature ever. When I read it I not only think of how uplifting it is for my own circumstances but I think of the author, David, and the highs and lows and the courage and the cowardice and the brilliance and the foolishness of that man. It truly lets you know that there is hope for us all xx

Oooh, I love “Dead Poet’s Society,” too, Kim! And sitting by the beach, watching and listening to the waves crash on the shore. And immersing myself in a book. And being in the company of good friends, especially those who’ve known me *forever* and still love me. And listening to music (anything except rap or twangy country!). And completing a difficult project, knowing I’ve accomplished something (maybe not world-changing, but important to me). And being with family, especially on holidays, regardless of whether we’re TV-sitcom cool. And…And…my list could go on. Love yours, by the way!

Now I look forward to next Fri with dinner and talk and want to give that man a good temple, neck rub and massage his hands with lotion. I’m willing to learn German so I can sing him (YOU RAISE ME UP) Hug him tight and show him how safe he can feel with me. But he doesn’t know this yet. But one day he will.

Reading a great book–the kind of book you stumble upon maybe once a year, if you’re lucky. The kind of book that you can’t put down and, when you aren’t reading it, you’re thinking about it. 13 Reasons Why, The Help, Gone Girl, The Time Traveler’s Wife… Those are the four I can think of in recent memory that really got inside my head!

I’m turned on by packing my backpack and going away, landing somewhere unknown. I’m turned on by exotic smells and views, by languages I don’t speak. Yes, travels make excited!

A trail run on a warm autumn day truly rings my bells.

The last moment of the British version of THE OFFICE, where there’s that great kiss.

Getting on an airplane for far-away travels.

    Watching my daughter run.

    Watching my son draw.

    A really good beer.

You turn me on because your name is Kim and Kim’s are clearly the most awesome people on the planet.
    We have great tits.
Seriously though…your writing comes from that sweet spot in your heart. You don’t hold back and you’re honest and raw. That is what makes a fantastic writer.
As for me, my other than husband passion, is nursing. There is no other adrenaline rush like it. xoxo Oh and turkey…I’m about to plow through one. (Canadian Thanksgiving)

I love this question. What sets me on fire?

    Speaking the radical truth.

    Defining my own happiness.

    The city lights.

PS I’m looking up your fav author now.

I love your list, and this question. (and also Ariel. I think I still have my copy somewhere…) Love the photo with your poppa–so sweet!

    Things that turn me on:

    Writing by moonlight.

    Travel by train.

    Deep laughter with good friends.

    A cold glass of Riesling.

    A rich, autumn tree kaleidoscope.
