Kim's Blogs

Endless Syllables of Deliciousness

Have you ever wondered what some of your favorite bloggers would actually be like face to face, eyeball to eyeball, skin to skin?

What would it  be like meeting them (In Person)  for a glass of wine discussing life, love, kids, sex, God, blogging?

I’ve wondered about this.

Would they truthfully & authentically live up to their blogs?

Would they be intellectual, brilliant, interesting, & wildly hilarious…

….Or would there be awkward silences and uncomfortable pauses?

Would they suddenly become individuals you  Do.  Not.  Recognize.

Would their words and insight flow from the same directions?

I’ve wondered about this.

I mean,

So many of you have become a small  part of my everyday existence.

….And hopefully, I’ve become part of yours.

I’ve  laughed outrageously at your fabulous narratives.

And I’ve sobbed when you’ve gushed your truth about bi-polar, rape, and postpartum depression.

You’ve become my sisters.

You’ve become women I’ve connected with in a sort of solidarity movement.

It’s been revolutionary.

Really.

You’ve allowed me to have this profoundly powerful platform to lament, mourn, cry, &  scream FUCK.

Without judgment.

I’ve used your chicken marsala recipes for  Sunday Dinners, and baked your extraordinary chocolate cakes and coconut macaroons for the church  bizarres.

Australia.   India.   Ireland.   London.   The French Alps.  South Africa.  Kenya.  The Caribbean.   New Zealand.  Tokyo.

San Francisco.   Atlanta.   New York.  Boston.  Las Vegas.  Austin.  Miami.

You reside in all of these places, and my life has become larger knowing you, learning from you,  and loving your vocabulary.

Have you experienced this sort of shared cohesiveness?

Can you feel the influence we can generate from a simple blog?

And more than that,

If we met face to face, eyeball to eyeball, skin to skin,  would the words between us pour like endless syllables of deliciousness?

I’ve been thinking about that.

—Dear, Readers,   have you met any of your fellow bloggers?  If so, did they live up to their blogs?   What are some of your stories?   Give me a shout out where you’re from!!!

My Favorite Skirt Chickies.  So sorry I wasn’t there!  Looooooooooove you.  Xx

    Great question, Kim! I was thrilled to meet Charlene Ross and she is just as fabulous in person as with her words. We’ve sat in the bleachers at never-ending track meets and swapped silly stories, opinions, and things that we probably wouldn’t want our children to hear. I was actually nervous the first time I met her for coffee – like a goofy teenager and first date. And the words flowed and I couldn’t wait to chat again.

    I have never met any of the bloggers I follow – you included! – and imagine it would be a fabulous experience. I can be a chatterbox, once I get started, so the aforementioned awkward silence might be welcome. 🙂

    Great post – as always – Kim! Believe it or not, I sat down and had coffee with a blogger yesterday and we chatted at Starbucks for two and a half hours! I now meet two bloggers regularly for lunch and we just had lunch last week….the three of us.

    Both of them are just as I expected – absolutely lovely. My sisters seem to like me a lot and they both say that I write EXACTLY the way I talk….even with the accent! (but they’re biased and since we have matching tattoos, they gotta say nice stuff!)

    As for meeting you – yes, please! I suspect we’d have a good time and I’d blush at the f-word…unless I was tipsy – then I’d laugh and blush!

    You’re the best and I suspect you’re just like your wonderful blog……heartfelt, crazy-in-a-good way, sincere, open, honest and friendly.

    I love you already!

    AS IF you and I could ever have a silent moment between us the day we meet. I don’t believe it would ever happen. I believe we are what we are behind what we post. Sure there may be a few people who are faking it behind written words but some of my dearest friends are e-friends I’ve met online and not in real life, you included. I feel like I’ve known you forever. It sometimes astonishes me to realize I’ve never met you.

    I DID meet up with some of my bloggy friends in Austin last May. We’ve decided to do it yearly. So next May, we’re gonna get crazy and crunk <–whatever that means in LA!! And that's not Louisiana either.

    How cool would a bloggy cruise be?

    I have also met some local bloggers. A few had totally different personalities than on their blog. I have to say I was a little disappointed.

    Just so you know, I love your blog. How do I put it on my sidebar? I don't know how to work your blog!

    Oh Kim,

    I just love this blog – as always your generous heart just shines through! And yes it was so fabulous to meet Jodene. I was nervous to meet her too. (She’s so much smarter than me!) She is simply gorgeous inside and out. And thank God for Jodene at 7 hour track meets. I couldn’t have gotten through them without her.

    You and I talked on the phone a couple of years ago – I think we need to do it again! And I hunger for the day we meet face to face – which I know we will. (And I also know it will be indeed be delicious … hopefully we’ll be able to stock up enough Merlot!)

    And yes, you were truly missed in Atlanta – meeting Elizabeth, Cheryl, Renee, Susan, Heather, Angelia, Ginger and so many others was truly sublime. There was never an awkward silence, never a lull, it was as if we were long lost friends reuniting – which in a way I suppose we were. I look forward to the day I meet my blogging soul sister Tina Drakakis one day – I had hoped to meet her in NYC next month, but sadly finances (or rather my lack of them) have made that impossible this year. Can’t wait to reconnect with my skirt! sisters -next time with you and Tina- and I know it will be wonderful, sublime, and yes incredibly delicious!

    Thank you for such an interesting topic, Kim. I think the question you pose is complex, with as many different answers as there are bloggers. There are some blogs that I follow regularly that I would gladly and excitedly jump at the chance to meet them in person. And then there are others, whom I like the relationship just the way it is via their blogs only. That does not mean that I don’t like them “as much” as the ones whom I definitely would like to meet in person, it just means there’s a different attraction of sorts.

    Thank you for providing an interesting subject to mull over ~ junemoon

    I haven’t met any bloggers I talked to online — I don’t count those I knew before either one of us was blogging. However, I did meet some people I had met online first, we used to hang out on the same forum, talking about books and movies that interested us. Some of them turned out to be pretty much the same people they were online, some were different. Me, for example. I can be talkative and outgoing online, but offline, I’m usually quiet and introvert (and anti-social most of the times).

    I met bloggers in real life, and I have had some sour disappointments, but mostly I have met some really wonderful people.

    But it still makes me sad that so many of the well known bloggers are not nearly as nice, friendly, simple or honest as they present themselves on their blogs. It’s just so sad.

    On the other hand, I also had the chance to meet some wonderful, wonderful women who are just so loving and smart and funny that sometimes I am tempted to clone myself just so I can e with all of them all the time 🙂

    I’ve met an American blogger living in Denmark and it was a lovely afternoon.

    I have never met anyone in person that I know from blogging. Part of me SO wants to, and the other part of me is afraid, for the reasons you said. Would it be the same? Yesterday I went to Blogher Writers, and while I didn’t meet anyone I follow there, I did get to meet a bunch of other bloggers, and everyone was amazing… So, now I am going to do the reverse, start following people online I met in real life.

    I met you briefly at the Run for Kay. It felt surreal although I already knew what you looked like from your pictures. I really liked seeing you with your family and local friends. Your blog posts and your support for me when I was blogging have made me want good things for you and I was happy to see the warm, caring people in your life. I felt hesitant to go out for dinner or drinks with you, to try to become in-person friends. Partially this was a time thing.I have many long distance friends and family members to keep up with and have quite a few local friends to do things with but am always looking for more people to share reflections, writerly insights etc. and virtual relationships work almost as well as embodied ones for this. I bet if we did really know each other in embodied life–if we worked together or were in a writer’s group or book group together we’d have moments of banding together over issues or perspectives and we would like each other because of that. I’m less of a Glamour, Girls Night Out Girl, more of a camper, hiker, casual dinner party person than you so maybe we wouldn’t be each other’s fun friends–but one of the good things about getting older (not that we’re old) is that we have more dimensions and don’t need one person to fill all roles. That’s why I like blogs too, seeking out different interests and voices as I need them, in small doses that I have time for. And you’ve impacted me greatly as a virtual friend–that’s a huge gift so I don’t know if I necessarily need more….Other bloggers that I check in on from time to time are people that I already know from other contexts so meeting them in writing was the new experience rather than the other way around…great post question by the way!

      ~~~~~~~I am much more interested in talking about writing, life, God, love, and deep subjects than “The Party Life.”
      I dont’ give a damn if you camp or dress up or wear lipstick!!
      You are still a woman I’ve connected w/ Greatly & Completely.
      I LOVED seeing you at the walk. I’ll never forget that beautiful face. Never. That beautiful face supporting me & my family.
      I like going for drinks w/ girlfriends….but the deepest friendships include more indepth topics about LIFE & Living & GOD.
      This is why I miss Kay so MUCH. We talked, prayed, loved, & were just together….
      To me, it’s not about what you do…. It’s about WHO YOU ARE.
      I LOVE who you are, Karen.
    PS. Actually, sorry to write again, but I think the time issue is probably not quite it–I’ve never really known what to say when I meet writers whose work I like or have connected to. It’s surreal because I feel like I already know them and then have to work through the understanding that I really don’t. And vise versa. I have the same experience each time I see the artist who inspired my novel-in-progress and I’ve known her in real life now for years!–I love talking with her, listening to her but there’s always that jarring, awkward feeling each time we meet because the person I’m writing about and whom I imagine when I see the art that feels like “mine” is her own person, inevitably always quite different from my made up one. Again, thought provoking question, thanks, Kim!
Since the vast majority of my blogging buddies live outside of Canada (don’t worry I wasn’t offended that you ignored us on your list… we don’t have much of an inferiority complex – ha-ha!!), it’s not like I can swing regular visits BUT, I got to thinking that at some point, we’d have to have a blogging reunion of sorts.     I’m fairly new to blogging, but I’ve been posting on bulletin boards and forums for decades. Started off mainly with Basketball Coaching forums (my nickname Up2DaRack is basketball slang for Up to the basket – but that’s a long story). I had the opportunity to meet several poster-coaches from many of the other boards and forums I’ve been on. First time was a coaching clinic a number of us decided to attend. Most were fairly true to personality, but then again, they were good folks already online, and we all became really close after that. The ones we had our suspicions about (the know-it-alls who were absolutely perfect in every way) never seemed to attend any gatherings, which of course further fueled the speculation about how they might be in real life. I’ve also attended several local gatherings of fellow forum members of a News site, and have to say that was a blast each time.
    I’ve never met any fellow WordPress bloggers in real life. The distances and interests are more varied here, making it a bit more difficult. That is not to say I wouldn’t want to meet a number of you with whom I’ve read and commented upon. Some day, maybe…
    So, if you’re ever in the Washington D.C. area, drop me a line.
I live so “remotely” to most bloggers so guess the opportunities are less. You can bet though that if and or when I do, the first thing I will do is blog about it! I don’t want to believe that there would be awkward moments of silence as we all follow a passion of wanting to share with the world, openly and honestly, regardless of what the subject matter is.
    Grrr. I posted a comment and the web page froze and it is all gone. Twice. You’d think I’d copy it so I could paste it and be happy – but no. Didn’t occur to me. It also happened yesterday – when I got the site not available – so gave up and came back today. Some things I never learn. 🙂
    Thank you for such a thought-provoking post, Kim. I’ve met some bloggers – and while some come on strong initially and then assume the other person will take full responsibility to keep the relationship going (goodbye, those, eventually), there are others I’ve formed friendships with, for the long-haul. We chat every day (almost) and make it a point to meet up when we visit each other’s city, since many of them live in different cities. Goes to show there are no real boundaries in friendship.
    I consider myself lucky because most of my friends are people I practically grew up with (through school, college, boyfriends, broken affairs, bitching, dreaming and all). We talk for hours on the phone, regardless of which country we live in, today. Feel so blessed.
    A big part of my life revolves around the bloggers I love (and that includes you, Kim). I worry when they don’t post for more than two days if they’re the regular sorts. I visit their blogs anyway just to feel connected, even if we don’t interact live. I love how I can chat with some and discuss silly things like my periods in detail. And i love it when they email me or message me to yell at me and ask WTF am up to. Ah, the freedom of friendship!
    I am grateful for my life. And love my own private blog-o-sphere. I love how they inspire and motivate me on days I feel somewhat eff-ed up.
    I credit you with making my day on several occasions 😉 Thanks for being, Kim.
    Some of my strongest friendships are with other bloggers. And even though, we’ve never met “in real life” I count them as some of my dearest friends. I would love to meet others.     Ahhhhh! How did I miss this blog????
    I met the illustrious Cheryl. . .and she was a riot and everything I thought she’d be and MORE. She was warm, kind, funny and not judgmental AT ALL. . .not even when I took her to a local dive bar that was wall-papered with one-dollar bills and then proceeded to knock over the guitar of the acoustic performer. Whoopsie. 🙂
    I haven’t written a blog in over a year and haven’t seen anyone in about. . .what? Three years? Maybe more? But I still think of many of you often and with love. You, Elizabeth, Cheryl, Charlene, Mercedes, Renee, Jodene, Ginger, Pam. . .and so many more! There are days when I DESPISE “teh intrawebz” and feel that it is nothing more than an insidious Tower of Babel that must be destroyed. Then, there are days when I am so grateful for it. . .so appreciative that I get to hear the voices and see the faces of beautiful human beings that I may not have otherwise known.
    Loving you bunches!
    Wonderful post, Mistress Kim. Tis true we live inside of the sphere, knowing, but not truly knowing the person the other side of the words the page. Blogging of course is different that a writer’s book. We do bare our souls, our thighs, our curves, the rants and raves, but is the person behind the words like the words. Hmmm Me, I am guessing we all keep a little back. Come on honey, it’s part of the seduction.
