I’M FROM…..
I’m from pink bubblegum carpet and bunk beds with boy’s names carved inside the oak– living on the West side.
I’m from generations of Sicilians where big mamas stirred homemade spaghetti sauce with basil and garlic and rolled out potato gnocchi.
I’m from orange Kool-Aid, peanut butter sandwiches, and running thru sprinklers in Aunt Carol’s yard on hot summer days.
I’m from frosty Minnesota winters creating snow angels with my sister, Kay.
I’m from Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, and Non-Denominational churches where I finally figured out it doesn’t matter a damn. I loved Jesus no matter where I sat.
I’m from Madonna’s: Like a Virgin, Lucky Star, and Papa Don’t Preach.
I’m from putting on black eyeliner & deep red lipstick on Piedmont Avenue with Sue before we drank cheap beer all night at the Pit.
I’m from big sprayed hair, Marlboro cigarettes, and a bit of hash… sweating on plastic seats– French kissing in Mike’s Corvette.
I’m from Mother Goddess who listened to Pasty Cline and baked warm chocolate chip cookies for us after school.
I’m from Jong, Sexton, Oliver & Plath.
(My all time fav. book)
I’m from poetry, metaphor, vowels, and symbolism.
I’m from sexy pole dancer to green eggs & ham.
I’m from single in the city to a married with kids.
I’m from Cruise Ships, London, Liverpool, Miami, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Nassau, & Cozumel living without inhibition.
(Carnival Cruise)
I’m from mourning, lamenting, weeping, and drinking too much Merlot.
I’m from resurrecting & rising after monsters and murders.
I’m from darkness.
I’m from light.
I’m from dying while still living.
I’ve from the salt of Margaritas mingled with the salt of tears.
But mostly,
I’m from Love.
It overflows into my soul like waterfalls. It gushes. It surges. It drowns me.
The love is enough for 5 lifetimes….
(Me & My Soul Mate & greatest Love, Kay)
~~~ Dear, Reader, tell me in one sentence where you’re from….
can’t be done in one sentence, as you so magically displayed. you are all these vibrant things, and so much more. i am from the same place as you. i am from the rainbow of our ancestral line, given the gift of life, dealing with grief and joy in this friendly universe but fallen world, rediscovering myself repeatedly, loving and being loved, best i can, progressing and being satisfied with who i am, and so much more.
–Lola,
My daddy’s sister, Carol, makes the best gnocchi! As a kid, that was my BIG birthday dinner Every Year. That may be why my Ass is quite happy now.. HA xxxx Kiss
I’m from Duluth with lots of bland, white Scandinavian food and memories of a loved sister, who like yours, was taken from us in a moment of anger and need for control, making that bland food seem now heavenly.
–Oh, Joan,
I love you. xx
This is so beautiful, Kim.
I am from kings and queens and Pilgrims and healers; a midwife who cooked like an Iron Chef; tears and terror; dreams and desires; stories and spotlights; music and madness; past and present; laughter and love.
–Hot Coco.
Gorgeous. xx love the alliteration. xx
Love your blog! Thanks for stopping by.
–Debra,
Thanx for visiting….x
I am from New England, born here of immigrant Italian parents who worked their asses off to show me life is worth living at full bore; friends and family are worth all your loyalty and loving; emotions are worth putting on full display, that it’s OK to be moved to tears or to laugh so hard it infects and lifts everyone around you or to erupt like a volcano in passionate anger or to bubble with joy and glee at something delightful; and most importantly, if you’re going to do something, put a lot of passion into it – nothing half-assed.
See what happens when you force me to one sentence? It runs on and on and on…
Nicely done Kim. Pleased to know you a little bit better from all those one sentence reveals.
—Phil,
))) xx
Passion. I feel your Passion
I am from survival, determined to become who I was always meant to be.
Love you,
Kimmers
Tia,
Beautiful. x Luv You.
Your blog is amazing. I have been reading for the last hour and the only reason I am going to stop for now is that is it is breaking my heart and I do not want to face a whole day at work feeling sad. I will return. <3
—-How is life in Nairobi? Thank goodness we can cry together….
I your list of where you are from! It contains some of the same things where I am from. And it is a beautiful poem!
—thanks, Liz.
) xx
I’m just a gal from Queens, and that pretty much sums up my life, my personality, and my charm.
By the way, one of my all-time fave books is Sylvia Plath’s the Bell Jar. She wrote so well, so poignantly.
–Monica,
Queens says A Lot! Spunk. Sassy. Charm. Wonderful.
“The Bell Jar” was great. Plath was a genius. My greatest mentor as a writer.
Her Jounals are superbly gorgeous, sad, insightful, funny, sexy, & magical. xxx
Ps. You must order “The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath” –this is the best.
Nice post – such lovely images. The more I know where I’m from, the more I know where I’m going is limitless.
I’m from sparklers lit by my dad, my grandmother’s bible, soft puppy fur, the smell of morning coffee, the lies of whiskey drunks, filthy boxing bags, and the best hugs my husband saves just for me.
Which about sums it up in a nutshell.
–Nota,
xx
So Lovely
We always lit sparklers as kids!
This was really good. I’m from nowhere and everywhere – dad was in the Army! I feel like I know you a little better now!
—Dear, Nan,
—-You are from Pure Beaty… xx
I love this!
L.
Thanks for stopping over
I’m from scary movies at the drive-in with half the neighborhood; homemade caramel popcorn balls for Halloween; and changing out of my orange Converse to roller skates with homemade pom poms at the toe on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Skateland, where we magically and joyfully went round and round with no final destination.
I’m from eight people in a house with one bathroom, togetherness, sadness, joy, creativity, learning, chaos and love, so much love. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Wonderful, thoughtful post Kim. You so graciously let us all into your life and your being.
WOW do I ever looooove this post. And you’re a Sylvia Plath fan, too? We might be long-lost bloggy sisters
I’m from hand-me-downs and socks with sandals which were supposed to provide a spine in my formative years, but left me feeling like the weirdo in Phys Ed instead; from Tori Amos and teenage angst to shoulderpads, obnoxious cursive, and classroom daydreams; German Christmas cookies and a tree that stayed up well into February.
This was a fun exercise
This is a wonderful post. I learned so much about you.
I am from cornfields and spending lazy summer days on the lake; riding our horses through endless farm fields; a father who made me the person I am today; a mother who loved me deeply; most importantly I am from a soulmate who gave me my childhood dreams on a silver platter and convinced me I was the most wonderful woman in the world and didn’t deserve less; now I am from a soul who is learning to live without that soulmate and an open, raw wound in my heart.
