Kim’s Review of “The Unfaithful Widow” by Barbara Barth

 DECEMBER  29, 2010

~~I’m head over heels in love with Barbara Barth.

Here’s three reasons why:    She’s hilarious.  She’s hilarious.  She’s daaaamn hilarious.

In The Unfaithful Widow  Barth  writes several short essays about her first year alone after the death of her husband.  The first sentence from “The Blue Cupboard” immediately made me smile.

“Some women have fantasies about sex.  I had  fantasies about owning a blue cupboard…I used to dream about this cupboard,…primitive, large and with just a hint of old robins egg blue paint.”

Barth brings her readers into her own private  journey when she writes about about pity parties, the man of her dreams, dating again,  condoms, the x rated chapter, the underwear thief,  heavy petting (with dogs- that is), counting xanax instead of sheep, reflection on men and dogs, talking to God,  and the quickest date in the universe.

“I arrived at the coffee shop a little early…the door flung open and a tall, thin well-dressed man rushed in…I stood up to get his attention, smiled at him and started to say “Hi.”

“I’ve left something in the car.  I’ll be right back.”

With that he dashed back out.

He is not coming back, I thought.

Then I started laughing.”

The Unfaithful Widow is a book about rediscovery, searching for who you once were, and in the end, finding exsactly what you were looking for.

It is a book about surviving…….in the midst of losing our deepest, greatest  loves.

On a cold winter’s night, these uplifting, amusing, insightful essays are just what the doctor ordered.

Amy NEEDS to Win this Book! :)
    December 29, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Oh! I desperately need to win this book – but not for me! It would be for my MOTHER! That woman needs a laugh right now more than ever. She and her jackass husband (who financially ruined them and left her and my youngest sister hanging out to dry, have parted ways (For which I am so friggin’ thankful. . .)! Unfortunately, she’s left feeling rather down-trodden about the whole thing and isn’t too excited about being a divorcee at the age of 57. Despite my trying to convince her that 57 is really the new 37 and that there exists LOTS of fun to still be had, she’s flung herself into the moat. Maybe reading this will have her swimming instead of SINKING in it. . . I’ve been smiling ever since I heard he was gone, but my heart is breaking for my mom – she really could use the laugh. xoxo

Amy send me your mother’s mailing address- or yours. I will send a copy to her! The contest is still running, so I hope there will be comments left. But your Mom needs to read my book. It will make her smile if nothing else. Barbara

I need this book! I have been married for twenty two years and I do not think that I could go on if something happened to my husband. Also, I teach 8th grade and I am always looking for a good laugh. I found in life, laughter is the best medicine. The strength and courage that you display to go on is indescribable you are a role model for others.

Great interview Barbara, and I am so glad featured you here on her site! OK, so I need to win this book for two reasons.
    1. I have more animals than Barbara… three dogs, 3 cats and a bird.
    2. The main reason I need to win, is for my Aunt Betty Jo. Aunt BJ is a lovely Southern woman , a true Steel Magnolia from the cultured, sans red-neck side of my family. Aunt BJ is 73, and just got a facelift. She has worn her blonde hair in a classic updo-french twist for the last 45 years. She eats sushi and is a lot more cool than most 25 year olds… Since her husband of 55 years, my Uncle Charlie , died 18 months ago, she has tried dating to no avail. She says the old men are boring her to tears. But here is the problem… Aunt BJ has a BIG crush on my husband . She thinks he hung the moon…
So help me win the book for Aunt BJ. Plus, I want to read it to. It could save my marriage!

    Hey, Barbara,

Thanks so much for your generous offer of giving out your books!

For me, reading “An Unfaithful Widow” was truly an escapism away from my own reality.

    Thank you for that.

    Love you, too. xx K.

    Barbara! Kim! Barbara! Kim!
I received Barbara’s book in the mail and delivered it unto the hands of my mother. She was very surprised and the inscription made her smile like I haven’t seen her smile in a while. It was thrilling. Today, she called me and told me that she finally sat down and started reading it (something she hasn’t had the time or attention for lately) and said that she is loving it. I can’t tell you the last time she sat down to just READ. I am so grateful to you. THANK YOU. xoxo
